En el año 1977 Damon Edge salió a la escena musical con una banda que se llamó Chrome y un álbum de nombre "The Visitation" que fue solo un preludio a lo que vendría luego, cuando Helios Creed se unió a la banda, creando un sorprendente sonido pre-industrial. Exploradores de los rincones oscuros de la mente proveniente de la más "pura" cultura lisérgica. Salvo el primer disco "The visitation" los que siguieron son un ataque sónico frontal sacado de la mente mas afiebrada de un novelista cyberpunk pasado de viaje, una mezcla de ruidos mecánicos, voces filtradas por efectos, tapes loops, guitarras plenas de inspiración, que no se dedican a cabalgar sobre un cómodo riff si no a comandar un viaje a toda velocidad a través de una pesadilla sónica en la que el único fin es acelerar más y tratar de que la mente no estalle de gusto al sentir toda la vorágine de sonidos que Chrome nos supo dar.
En mi opinión el mejor Chrome se despliega hasta 1983, cuando Helios Creed se va para empezar una carrera solista con algunos muy buenos discos. Damon Edge se quedó con el nombre de Chrome (aparte sacó discos con su nombre) e incorporó en guitarra a Remy Devilla; con algunas buenas producciones logró sostener el buen nombre que el grupo se supo ganar en la década anterior pero sus producciones (para mi gusto) jamás alcanzaron el nivel del Chrome anterior, esta etapa en la que solo Damon Edge quedó al frente es música con melodías más livianas, música hecha con mucha pulcritud y sensibilidad, a la que según mi gusto le falta la creativa desprolojidad y agresividad de Creed.
Como amante de la música explorativa y buscador de nuevas sensaciones, debo decir que Chrome me hizo llegar con mi imaginación mucho más lejos de lo que otro grupo pudo hacer, tomó mi cerebro y lo lanzó más allá de cualquier horizonte terrestre, me trajo imágenes que solo se pueden encontrar en otros mundos fuera de este planeta donde solo la genialidad de este dúo y un buen "trip" te pueden llevar. En agosto 1995 lamentablemente falleció Damon Edge en Los Angeles. Helios Creed vive en Hawaii y continua tocando y grabando (más abajo encontrarás un link a un reportaje a Helios).

Este fue un disco que recopila la música de varios grupos entre ellos y aparte de Chrome estan MX-80 sound, The Residents y Tuxedomoon, cada uno de los cuales hacían entre 3 o 4 temas pero todos ellos sonaban una versión propia de "I left mi heart in San Francisco". La formación de la banda fue la misma que en su disco anterior. |

CHROME COMMUNICATIONS featuring DAMON EDGE
There’s this part of me - something deep in my soul - that longs for dissonance. Maybe it’s some unconscious drive toward the destruction of harmony and order. I don’t know. But, whatever it is, very few musical groups seem to satisfy the need. Chrome is one of those few. And Damon Edge is the mastermind behind this unusual ever-changing arrangement. Edge began altering music (and many-a-listener’s mind) back in 1975, and has been a consistent creative force ever since, taking almost 180 degree turns at times to explore new realms of aural adventure.
Chrome evolves in steps, sort of bridging the gap between 60’s psycho-delia, punk and new wave, and introduces elements from other places and planets. Alien Soundtracks and Half Machine Lip Moves (Chrome’s 2nd and 3rd releases, circa ’78) paved the way for most of today’s “alternative” music. Damon Edge’s intense drumming and production skills mixed with the phase-warped, overloaded guitar sound of Helios Creed and John Lambdin was the beginning of something that would change the way rock was played and heard, for good. Chrome’s music is intensely “stony” - it was a serious dare, amongst my circle of “high” school friends, to try and handle them on any mind-altering drugs. Some weaker minds were lost forever. I was happy with the new and improved reality Chrome brought me and continued use in higher doses, serving as one of my biggest influences musically.
Chrome’s 5th release, Blood on the Moon, was the sound of a garage band turned immortal. Damon Edge and Helios Creed were now gods. Their synth and guitar sounds, backed by the Stench Brothers on drums and bass, produced the first, true psychedelic metal - Deep Purple was left behind in a faded lavender heap. Three more Edge/Creed creations were released before the inevitable happened. Chrome re-emerged a new band in 1984 - without Helios Creed, without missing a beat. Damon hooked up with a new guitarist, Remy Devilla, and put his band in a time machine, setting the controls for the future...
